The Ebola Scare

Ebola seems to be something everyone is paying a lot of attention to right now. However, I'm not so sure everyone knows a lot about the virus and how it is actually spread.

Although the first case of Ebola was discovered in 1976 the world had not paid full attention to the details of it.
The World Health Organisation reported that between 1976 and 2013 there were 1716 confirmed cases of Ebola.

Largest Outbreak

The largest outbreak to date is the 2014 West Africa Ebola Outbreak which is presently affecting Nigeria, Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. As of 16 October 2014, there has been over 9,000 suspected cases with more than 4,500 in deaths.

These numbers have shaken the world and brought countries to make decisions to stop travel from the affected countries and at the same time implement training in Ebola awareness.

The World Health Organisation reported that over 220 health workers are included in the number of deaths.

World appeal

The affected countries are not prepared to deal with such large numbers at one time. While the need for treatment beds is approximately 2100 the capacity is presently over 800. The Director General of WHO has appealed to the world to render assistance saying "Countries affected to date simply do not have the capacity to manage an outbreak of this size and complexity on their own. I urge the international community to provide this support on the most urgent basis possible."

A bit about Ebola.
